Pillow Talk: How to Master the Art of the Throw Pillow

Don’t underestimate the power of the pillow. Especially the throw pillow. With so many different patterns, textures, colors and styles to choose from, it may seem a little intimidating at first. But have no fear! Decorative pillows are extremely fun and we’re here to help.

Throw Pillow 101

Create a “pillowscape”

For the throw beginners, think 2-2-1. This is a beginner’s formula that will get you hooked on decorative pillows. (hint: It works for beds too!) Here’s how it works: start with two larger sized pillows with a color/pattern/texture of your choice on the ends, add two smaller sized pillows in a different pattern or color next to them, and lastly add a rectangular pillow for the center. You have created a perfect “pillowscape.” The graduating size and mixing of colors and patterns is a great look that transforms any bed or sofa. Stick to a color scheme and let your imagination run wild.

Textures and colors

Textures and colors bring contrast, which add emotion and are extremely visually pleasing. Try adding texture to a smooth couch or shiny pillows on a fuzzy couch for warmth and comfort. While you play around with different solids and patterns, keep in mind that opposites attract.

Address the whole room

Here is where we think about polishing the room. Create a collection of pillows that relate to each other somehow through color or style, unifying the whole room and looking more polished than ever.

Modern vs. Traditional

If you are going for more of a modern look, less is more. With this style, pillow size and placement defines it all. Try larger sized pillows over smaller sized pillows. As confirmed by Real Simple magazine, a limited color palette and large geometric prints on smooth, tightly woven fabrics, like cotton and linen, work well in a modern environment.

If you are more into the traditional style, think symmetry. Imagine eye-pleasing proportions and even numbers of pillows placed on either side of the couch, showing a sense of order and balance. Tips from Real Simple magazine: Velvet and silk look great in a classic setting.
