Working Out in 2014

The holidays are over, we’ve welcomed in 2014 and our New Year’s resolutions are well underway.  For many of us, losing weight, getting in shape and maintaining a healthy lifestyle are at the top of our resolution lists this year.  But it can be challenging to stick to, especially if you’re prone to “gym burn-out.”  The good thing is that Utah offers plenty of fun ways to get in shape without having to spend hours on the treadmill.

Take Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis.  If you’re not familiar with it, you’re probably not alone.  Gyrotonic is a workout that combines yoga, ballet and Pilates-type machines, and is designed to improve strength and flexibility through rhythmic and harmonious movement.  It’s just starting to gain popularity in Utah so now might be a good time to try it out.  You can find classes at En Route Movement in Salt Lake and Range in Park City.

Boot camps have been around for several years and are still a popular choice.  With a variety of exercises in an indoor or outdoor environment, workouts are tough but never boring.  Plus, they’re effective at burning calories and building muscle.  Programs like Boot Camp with Jess in Midvale, Draper and West Jordan, Wasatch Adventure Boot Camp in South Jordan, and Spire Boot Camp in Salt Lake will get you in shape and looking good in that bikini (you too guys) by the summer.

Possibly one of the toughest workouts around is CrossFit. Combining aerobic exercise, gymnastics, and Olympic weight lifting, it has exploded in popularity and gyms have popped up all over Utah including Ute CrossFit Sugarhouse, CrossFit Park City, CrossFit NRG in Salt Lake, Put it Up CrossFit in Orem and many more.

No matter how you decide to get in shape this New Year, there’s certainly no shortage of fun and effective workouts in Utah.  Try a few things, see what works for you and you just might find that 2014 is the year that your resolution sticks!
