Emigration Canyon Living Offers Fresh Air, Milder Temps, Great Views

Long cherished as an escape from city life, the early days of Emigration Canyon saw scenic day trips by train and the building of private summer homes. The amenities the canyon offered could not be denied and development continued with the construction of year-round residences, the Pinecrest Inn summer resort and the famous Ruth’s Diner which opened in Emigration in 1949 and is still serving delicious food today.

In the 1980’s, Emigration Oaks and Emigration Place, two large-scale luxury developments paved the way for Emigration Canyon to offer its residents a stunning outdoor oasis while enjoying all the amenities of modern home living.

Emigration Canyon has been said to have a “Park City” feel without the high prices, crowded events and large scale development. Preserving the integrity of the canyon is the desire of its residents. Only about a quarter of the total acreage in the canyon is privately owned. Emigration Canyon is well maintained with excellent snow removal services on the main roads, with all-wheel-drive capability advisable in winter months for the less traveled, smaller roads. The community is also fire-conscience with a one-million gallon water tank that sits above Emigration Place and a fire station just below Emigration Oaks, as well as in Research Park.

Emigration Canyon is a haven for hikers, joggers, birdwatchers, cyclists, cross country skiers and mountain bikers. The rustic setting offers spectacular scenery, frequent wildlife sightings and beautiful sunsets. The mountainous terrain allows many residents to hike or ski tour out their back doors.

The canyon has long been cherished as an escape from city life, winter inversion and the valley’s scorching summer heat, but Emigration is also known as the “Banana Belt” of the Wasatch with daytime winter temperatures that average ten degrees warmer than the valley below.

Though still only lightly inhabited, Emigration Canyon can be described “as the right place” for those who prefer peace, seclusion and modern comforts in a beautiful canyon setting.
